HILLSBORO, N.H. (October 9, 2014) – The Hillsboro Fire Department will soon be answering calls in the all-new 2015 Ford F-150, thanks to local community supporter OSRAM SYLVANIA. The company is donating the truck to the Hillsboro community during its annual Employee Appreciation Day today at its automotive factory in Hillsboro.

The Hillsboro Fire Department provides Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Services to a community that covers approximately 42 square miles and has an estimated population of 6,000 residents. During calendar year 2013, the department responded to approximately 1,000 calls. The fire department is made up of full-time staff and resident volunteers, many of whom are employees at the OSRAM SYLVANIA Hillsboro plant.

The 2015 F-150 is the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 ever. Regardless of model configuration or engine choice, every truck customer benefits from up to 700 pounds of weight savings the new truck delivers. The all-new F-150 can tow up to 1,100 more pounds and haul up to 530 more pounds.

Important for emergency responders driving late at night or early in the morning, the 2015 Ford F-150 is the first truck of its kind to feature an available full LED forward lighting system, a technology made possible by OSRAM, Tier 1 supplier Flex-N-Gate and DBM Reflex. A key performance and styling differentiator, the innovative LED lighting system is comprised of a low beam, high beam, light driver module, turn module and park module, and features components from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The headlamps deliver a unique, strong and powerful look that compliments the commanding design of the entire vehicle.

No other light-duty pickup truck on the road today has LED headlamps. LED lamps use 63 percent less energy than the halogen bulbs seen in competitor trucks, and the light quality and aesthetics of the technology are superior.

“We hope Hillsboro residents will be proud to see their local heroes driving around town in the all-new F-150 with the beautiful LED headlight system designed and assembled right here in Hillsboro,” said Cheryl Blackwood, Hillsboro plant manager, OSRAM SYLVANIA.  “Bringing cutting-edge lighting innovation to one of the most iconic vehicles on the road today generates a lot of pride and excitement throughout our facility and the community.”

During the celebration, representatives from OSRAM and local government officials spoke to the importance of keeping automotive lighting innovation and technology at the forefront of the industry both globally, nationally and locally here in Hillsboro.

Ford has been a North American lighting innovator since the 1970s, most often in conjunction with OSRAM. Forty years of U.S. automotive lighting manufacturing experience stands behind the new F-150 LED headlight manufacturing line in Hillsboro and OSRAM SYLVANIA has made significant investments to support the project.

“We are one of the few automotive light source manufacturers left in the United States and our team is very proud of that,” said Blackwood. “Our partnership with Ford enabled us to hire and train new people, to invest money in the facility, and to develop new product and new processes.”

“Hillsboro counts on the dedicated men and women of our fire department to protect us from harm’s way,” continued Blackwood, “and now they can count on our innovative lighting system to help keep them safe on the roads. Our industry first headlamp system is extremely durable, essentially ‘Built Ford Tough,’ and is expected to last the vehicle’s lifespan.”

Higher performance is another benefit as LEDs deliver performance unmatched by traditional halogen technologies. New LED products and technologies from OSRAM insure the lights are robust, long lasting and have high light output. Both LED systems are highly resistant to shock and vibration. Due to their unique light emitting characteristics, their use improves optical efficiency of the headlight system.

“Danger doesn’t stop when the sun is down, and sometimes the call comes in when it is dark early in the morning or late at night,” said Kenneth Stafford, chief, Hillsboro Fire Department. “Having clear visibility on the road is crucial for us, which is why this LED lighting technology is so important. We are greatly appreciative of this donation and for OSRAM SYLVANIA being such a great supporter of Hillsboro.”
