With over 12,000 students, Central Connecticut State University is dedicated to significantly reducing its carbon footprint. To demonstrate the university’s commitment to energy efficiency, CCSU President Jack Miller was an early signatory to the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment. As part of this commitment, CCSU developed a Climate Action Plan, which included an upgrade of the campus’s outdoor area lighting. In addition to increasing campus energy savings, CCSU also sought to reduce maintenance costs and enhance the overall safety and security of their students through the project.
CCSU chose to upgrade the campus street lights to LED technology because of its ability to achieve cost and energy efficiency without compromising safety due to light quality. The retrofit process began in January 2010, when 500 OSRAM SYLVANIA D6 LED Retrofit Kits for Outdoor Area Lighting were installed into Victorian lamps in parking lot and pedestrian walkway fixtures on the CCSU campus. OSRAM SYLVANIA’s D6 product was selected for the installation because of its small frame, which allowed forth existing street light globes to easily be fitted over the kit. The upgraded lamps also help the campus reduce light pollution in the area. Increasing the average life span from 2.5 years to 12.5with their new LED system, CCSU has the capacity to save $41,400 in annual energy savings. Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT
OSRAM SYLVANIA’s D6 LED Retrofit Kit for Outdoor Area Lighting was selected for the installation because of its small frame, which allowed for the existing street light globes to easily be fitted over the kit, and for its longevity which will help CCSU save approximately $1,055,000 over the LED system’s 12.5 year life span.
CCSU’s green initiatives, reinforced by the area lighting retrofit project’s energy savings and reduction of light pollution, have helped the university earn the accolade of “exemplary Green Institution” from the Princeton Review.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Retrofitting the street lights will provide significant energy savings to CCSU. In total, the installation will save 240,900 kWh annually for the university, resulting in a total of 2,750,000 kWh in savings over the lamps’ lifetime. So far, the lamps have been a succession the CCSU campus, with campus security noticing an improvement in the color rendering index of the street lights. Since the initial installation, 43 additional OSRAM SYLVANIA D6 LED Retrofit Kits for Outdoor Area Lighting have been purchased and implemented around the campus.
