The Situation

Schools and universities across North America are trying to reduce their power consumption and impact on their surrounding environments by investing in energy saving technologies. The University of Toronto has been actively engaged in becoming an energy efficient and environmentally friendly institution through the many programs they have instituted throughout the university.

The university recently saw the need to improve their main campus street lighting to benefit their students, their campus and their community.

The university enlisted the expertise of OSRAM SYLVANIA to provide a complete street lighting solution that allowed the campus to save energy, reduce maintenance costs and decrease the school’s environmental footprint. The first priority for the project was to preserve the look and feel of the school grounds. Since the main Toronto campus' streets and promenades were already lined with 100 sleek, ornamental pole mounted lights, retaining these existing fixtures was of paramount importance since they are an integral part of the campus’ perfect balance of modern architecture and old world charm.

The Solution

Lighting typically accounts for over 20 percent of a campus’ total electrical consumption, so schools benefit greatly from an energy efficient makeover. Traditionally, streetlights utilize a wide range of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps rated anywhere from50W to 400W. When coupled with a ballast, the actual system wattage increases by another 15–20%. OSRAM SYLVANIA recently introduced the LED Retrofit Kit for Outdoor Area Lighting, an LED street lighting system that is an alternative to HID lamps. The product was a perfect solution for the University of Toronto project as it enabled the campus to achieve their lighting goals and save energy with advanced LED lighting without a fixture change.

“This SYLVANIA LED Retrofit Kit for Outdoor Area Lighting allowed us to maintain a good looking white light over existing HID lamps that greatly reduced the system wattage, increased the system light levels and was easy to install,” said Blair Mochrie, University of Toronto trade services manager. “I was very impressed with how the LED unit fit securely, like a glove, into our existing fixtures with no need for additional external modifications.”

The LED Retrofit Kit for Outdoor Area Lighting is suitable for college campuses, industrial parks, city street lighting, parking lots and many other outdoor lighting applications. The retrofit replaces HID technology with an LED light source. This improves the application by providing a better lit, more welcoming and secure atmosphere for people after dark. Without having to replace an entire fixture, the LED Retrofit Kit for Outdoor Area Lighting can be easily installed in a wide variety of outdoor fixtures.

LED Retrofit Kit systems are designed for maximum long-term performance, low cost operation and ease of installation; the product is backed by OSRAM SYLVANIA's industry leading warranty. The revolutionary system from OSRAM SYLVANIA uses only 40 watts of power to operate. The kit takes advantage of the directional light distribution of 66 high brightness, Golden DRAGON® Plus LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and delivers light only where needed, minimizing light trespass and disruption to an application’s surroundings and neighbors. It conveys the aesthetic appeal the university was aiming for, while providing an environmentally preferable solution that offers substantial energy savings and dramatic improvements in light quality.

“This new LED Retrofit Kit is a perfect solution for campuses like the University of Toronto,” explains JR Salker, OSRAM SYLVANIA applications engineer. “The product offers huge energy-savings without sacrificing performance, safety or aesthetics.”

The Green Effect

By upgrading to the LED Retrofit Kit for Outdoor Area Lighting, the University of Toronto was able to be “green” and save “green”— installing the mercury-free LED product afforded the school the ability to reduce the impact on their surrounding environment and to their electrical budget. “We were really looking for a way to cut our energy consumption and reduce our labour needs without going over our budget,” Mochrie said. “OSRAM SYLVANIA was able to supply an innovative solution that met our every objective. We have a great, long-term relationship with them, so we knew we were in good hands when we approached SYLVANIA.”

The Bottom Line

By simply upgrading to the SYLVANIA LED Retrofit Kit, the University of Toronto was able to significantly reduce their operating costs and energy consumption. Additionally, the cooler color temperature and 70 CRI of the LEDs installed improved the quality and safety of the campus outdoor and area lighting. LEDs are directional in nature allowing the university to aim light where needed, to prevent excessive light pollution and protect students as they travel around campus during dark hours.
