Greenbuild 2014: It’s Time to Think Beyond Energy Efficiency

Lighting is a vital part of any green building strategy.  Every building uses lighting, and according to the US Department of Energy, lighting comprises about 30% of a commercial building’s electricity usage. Reducing that electricity consumption directly lowers operating costs, but it also reduces a facility’s carbon footprint.

Energy efficiency is only part of the equation.  Using lower wattage lamps can save kilowatts, for sure.  But sustainability in lighting goes beyond energy savings.  It helps to think in terms of reducing waste.

  • Wasted wattage – address this with more efficient lighting systems – lower wattage lamps and ballast combinations, more efficient technologies such as LED and even fluorescent

  • Wasted light – direct your lighting to the applications that need them.  Avoid outdoor light pollution and indoor light spillage.  Luminaires and lighting controls can help.

  • Wasted time – why light a space that won’t be used?  A recent study showed that parking facilities in the US are lit 95% of the time but only used 20%.  Innovative, programmable lighting controls can provide light where and when it’s needed and dim or shut down light when and where it’s unnecessary.

Visit OSRAM SYLVANIA’s booth #1230 at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo and see firsthand how innovation and technology is helping reduce waste in lighting.  The booth’s lighting is controlled by a hand-held tablet.  Energy-efficient lighting is showcased with different technologies for both the commercial and residential settings.

We’re proud to be a member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) since 2003.  The USGBC's mission is well aligned with the mission we have in the lighting industry - help our customers reduce their buildings' environmental footprint with responsible strategies and innovative solutions.
