Danvers, Mass.– North American lighting leader OSRAM SYLVANIA today unveiled the OSRAM ITOS® O-03100 LED lamp for otoscopes. Delivering higher lumens than both traditional halogen lamps and other LED light sources, the ITOS O-03100 allows superior visualization of the inner ear which can help better diagnose patients. Manufactured in the United States, the LED retrofit lamp fits the most popular Welch Allyn otoscope devices and requires no modification.

As the only FDA approved LED replacement lamp, the ITOS O-03100 is up to 70 percent brighter than traditional halogen light sources. Enhanced brightness can make a difference as indicated by a study on Acute Otitis Media conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center and reported by the American Academy of Family Physicians in April 2000. The study indicated that a brighter light source was key to accurate visualization of the tympanic membrane and proper diagnoses.

“A doctor is only able to properly diagnose a patient if they have all the facts, and with the human ear, that means being able to see inside as best as possible,” said Jack Burwick, product marketing manager, OSRAM SYLVANIA. “The OSRAM ITOS O-03100 LED lamp for otoscopes offers high quality light which means medical professionals are able to better examine their patients and make the best call.”

Longer Life and Better, Consistent Light

Halogen lamps with life cycles of only 10-20 hours pose greater potential for reduced light output towards the end of their life cycle. The ITOS O-03100 LED lamp has an average lifetime of over 25,000 hours, exceeding life over a traditional halogen lamp by a factor of more than 1,000, which means far fewer lamp replacements. The gold-plated lamp body provides excellent thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, both critical to supporting the extended lifetime.

Unlike other options, the ITOS O-03100 LED lamp delivers white light of the same color temperature and excellent color rendering as traditional halogen lamps. However, traditional halogen lamps will undergo a shift in color temperature during dimming or as the battery discharges, potentially leading to different visualizations of the inner ear. The OSRAM ITOS O-03100 LED lamp maintains a steady color temperature during dimming and battery discharge, with minimal color shift. Switching to the ITOS O-03100 lamp provides the same color quality, but with greater consistency. This translates to doctors being able to more accurately see inside a patient’s ear and identify any potential problems over the life of the lamp.
