OSRAM SYLVANIA Showcasing Latest Lighting That Leads at International Parking Institute Conference & Expo
Innovative Lighting That Drives Greater Comfort, Security for Users and Savings for Parking Garages

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Danvers, Mass. (May 20, 2013) – North American lighting leader OSRAM SYLVANIA will be demonstrating a full portfolio of lighting solutions, controls and systems for parking facilities at Booth #231 at the IPI Conference & Expo, the largest educational and networking event for parking and transportation professionals in the world.

Parking facilities can contribute a great deal to the revenue of a business or boost revitalization programs in a community, but they pose lighting challenges such as safety and security issues, unconditioned spaces, light trespass and light pollution and high electricity consumption.

LED lighting can help address each of these challenges. With their directional nature, the placement of light can be well controlled, light trespass can be minimized and local nighttime lighting ordinances can be better met. The extremely long life of LED systems reduces maintenance costs, and their tolerance to extremely low temperatures means they can be used in cold-weather without loss of light output. LED lighting solutions are energy-efficient, can decrease utility bills significantly, and, because they are dimmable, can achieve further energy reductions when combined with a smart lighting control strategy that incorporates occupancy sensors, task tuning, time scheduling or daylight harvesting.

Some of the solutions OSRAM SYLVANIA will be demonstrating at the show include the following.

  • PermaLED™ Low Profile LED Canopy Luminaire - environmentally preferable LED alternatives to traditional high-intensity discharge luminaires up to 175W, offering energy savings of up to 74 percent with a rated life of 100,000 hours (L86)
  • The ProPoint® LED Acorn Post Top Luminaire series for downtown areas, walkways, historic areas and municipalities; available in both 120-277V and 347-480V universal voltages
  • The award-winning ProPoint Industrial Linear LED Luminaire utilizing remote phosphor technology delivers high-quality uniform light for parking garages, stairwells, tunnels, roadways, cold storage, and other demanding applications
  • ProPoint LED Wall Pack Luminaires designed for lighting stairwells, outdoor walkways and corridors with a traditional cutoff design for low glare
  • ENCELIUM® Energy Management System (EMS) - A software-based, integrated lighting control and energy management system that provides the right amount of lighting when and where it is required
  • High Efficiency Lamps & Ballasts - SYLVANIA high-efficiency portfolio which meets today’s increasing demands for energy efficiency, extended life, improved color rendition and reduced environmental impact, including the award-winning SYLVANIA OCTRON® 800 XP® XL (eXtended Life) ECOLOGIC®3 T8 Fluorescent Lamp with the longest T8 lamp life in the industry on T8 ANSI rated ballasts – up to 84,000 hours
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations - Turnkey solutions installed and maintained by the experts at SYLVANIA Lighting Services

A well-designed lighting system is a critical success factor to a profitable parking facility. Consider the following when addressing your lighting needs:

  • Proper Illumination Levels
Provide adequate illumination in various areas of the parking facility depending on the task conducted. Increased light levels are needed where activity is higher or where vehicular and pedestrian traffic may cross, such as drop-off zones or entrances. Excessive illumination is also unnecessary and can waste energy.
  • Optical Control
Create an atmosphere of excellent visibility by lighting vertical surfaces to note potential obstacles, such as changes in elevation or traffic intersections. Well placed luminaires with appropriate photometric distributions minimize glare for drivers and pedestrians and eliminate dark areas where intruders might hide. Good vertical illumination allows quick identification of objects and people, as well as proper imaging by surveillance systems, and also minimizes contrast between bright light sources and adjacent walls or surfaces.
  • Color Quality
Select light sources with good color rendering properties. This facilitates the quick identification of one’s own vehicle, as well as other pedestrians. When unfortunate incidents do occur, the accurate description of an object or person may lead to rapid resolution.
  • Technology Selection
Selecting energy-efficient and long-life lighting systems decrease operating costs for parking facilities and project the image of a well-maintained business. Utility bills and labor costs to replace lamps or maintain luminaires are reduced, both positively impacting the bottom line.
  • Controls Strategy
A smart lighting control strategy can help a parking facility save energy, while creating a more comfortable structure for visitors. Luminaires may be dimmed during the day when natural light is available, particularly in perimeter areas. Lighting in transition areas, such as entrances and exits, may be programmed to assist in visual adaptation, particularly when entering from bright sunlight. Occupancy sensors and time scheduling may be incorporated where volume varies greatly by time of day or between weekday and weekend hours. Bi-level switching triggered by occupancy sensors may also be used as a way to highlight activity as part of a crime prevention program.
  • Wayfinding and Signage
Lighting can be a fun and creative way to help direct traffic through a space. Using visual cues, such as signs, colors, or lines of light, can be an extremely effective way to highlight certain key areas, such as parking zone identification, elevator lobbies, stairwells, payment kiosks, and exits. Speedy flow and transaction times contribute to increasing one’s sense of security in a parking facility.
